‘Popular Culture’ is cultural activity that gains widespread acceptance within a society over a period of time rather than for a brief historical moment.
The term ‘sixties’ not only refers to the decade but it refers to the time when values began to change quite radically. The ‘swinging sixties’ saw conflict between the teenagers and their parents. The era was associated with sexual liberation, the pill, flower power and hippies. Gender roles began to change, nuclear families began to break down and the younger generation were influenced by both British and American trends in music, dancing, clothing, literature, drug taking and drinking.
